‘Preparation’ was our prompt for poems last week. The submissions were such fun to read. However I had this acrostic poem emailed to me that I really enjoyed, and I think when we leave school we sort of forget about the joy in an acrostic poem. I will definitely be making an effort to try my own hand at these again!
Pause. Reset. Exhale. Plan Actions. Realise Amazing Talent In Our Next step.
Our acrostic poet has won themselves 3 months full access to The Poetry Nook! If you’re interested in having a chance to win 3 months full access to The Poetry Nook, then read on to find out this month’s prompt.
Last week I shared on Notes a poem about feeling like you need to write a poem but don’t yet have the words to shape the poem.
The result of this was me spending lots of time trying to find the words I didn’t have. Paying attention to the people around me, to passing conversations, and a lot of memories.
One memory was of an unexpected delivery during a lockdown from a friend. A thoughtful gift of love enclosed in a cardboard box. This warming memory resulted in the below poem.
I’ve taken this prompt quite literally, but the more time I sit with it, the more unexpected deliveries I can think of in just the past month. I’ve been very lucky with new friendships, new family arrivals, new opportunities. This is a fun prompt to play with, so I hope you have lots of fun with it.
An Unexpected Delivery
A box has landed on my doorstep My name is printed clearly across the top Of a squwiff delivery label, Declaring ownership. Brown film clings to it's sides, Wrinkling at the corners, Like my Grandfather, After too many summer suns. A hole has appeared in one corner. Telling tales of rough terrains. Curiousity leads me to it. Gaining a peak of what's inside. Perhaps it's filled with chocolate, The sort that melts upon your tongue, Perhaps some notebooks, With clean crisp pages. Perhaps it's filled with laughter. Goodness knows we need more of that. Perhaps it's filled with love, Ready to burst out into the world! This box is unexpected. It's secrets are not spilled so easily. Poirot would solve it in an instant. To me the mystery remains.
Thank you for reading, and I am looing to forward to seeing your responses to this prompt. Please share by either replying to this email, or clicking the button to leave a comment.
I’ll see you next week for the next Prompt Poetry!

An Unexpected Delivery
A knock on the door, a sound of surprise,
I open it eagerly, eyes filled with delight.
A package awaits, a world in disguise,
A trove of stories, my heart takes flight.
Pages whisper secrets, thrumming in my hands,
Each book a portal, to realms yet unexplored.
Characters come alive, in magical lands,
Imagination ignited, my spirit restored.
From classics to mysteries, tales of love and war,
I lose myself in pages, hours slip away.
A largesse, a gift, a literary galore,
Transported to worlds, where dreams hold sway.
With each turn of a page, a new adventure unfolds,
An unexpected gift, a journey in my hands.
Words dance on paper, their stories never old,
A surprise not displeasing, a world that expands.
“An Unexpected Delivery”
My phone dings.
I ignore it for now,
Discouraged and tired,
“Let me sit down,”
My feet complain,
My legs the same.
I pick up my phone
And the message reads:
“Here is your reminder...
That I’m thankful for you.”
A smile- small-
Parts my lips.
Thank you, my friend.
